Ideas and Intellectuals in Latin America: Histories, Registers and Approaches.
Latin American thought contains a variety of manifestations and registers that it developed by way of multiple interactions and tensions with discourses and images coming from different times, places and disciplines. Its relationship to Latin America’s history has not only determined how its contents may refer to this continent’s reality, but it also provided a context that required adopting modes of expression and literary forms – like the essay or the proclamation –different from those produced in Europe and the United States.
In Latin American thought, the frontiers between literature, essay, historiography, sociology, and cultural criticism, have been porous, allowing for the introduction of distinctive features into an intellectual field that is constantly redefining itself. Analogously, Latin American Humanities and Social Sciences, seeking to understand a “peripheral” modernity, operate along vague borders among different registers of writing, and in spheres that oscillate between knowledge and power.
To discuss these aspects of Latin American thought more broadly treating the peculiar itineraries of Latin American thought, from the question on the possibility of reading its works and figures standing from a historical and cultural reflection. Perspectives which linking researches from specific disciplines such as the current debates in cultural history, history of ideas, intellectual history, sociology of culture, literary criticism, and cultural studies. By examining authors, concepts or specific problems, the contributions should reflect the different elaborations and positions of discourses and images in Latin America, and the interweaving among the various registers in which they have been captured. The aim of this special issue is to rethink the current possibilities of critical intellectual practice that is at the height of the long tradition that precedes it and can face the challenges that our present time poses for thinking.
